WHAT IS A CREDIT FREEZE?

When you freeze your information with CREDCO, they can no longer share your information. This even mean, they can not share information with the three major credit bureaus without your permission.

Security freezes, also known as credit freezes, restrict access to your credit file. This makes it harder for identity thieves to open new accounts in your name. It also make it harder for credit bureaus to verify your negative disputed items. Most people only know of the top 3 credit reporting agencies : Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. It is a few more out there that the top 3 credit bureaus get their information from: Credco, ARS, Lexis Nexus, Sage Stream, and Innovis.

HOW CAN A CREDIT FREEZE HELP YOU?

A credit freeze doesn’t affect your credit score and:

  1. It doesn’t permanently prevent you from opening a new account or doing other things like applying for a job or renting a home. However, if you decide to take out a new line of credit or do anything else that requires a credit check, you will need to lift your freeze temporarily,  for a specific time.
  2. It doesn’t prevent you from accessing your free annual credit report.
  3. It doesn’t prevent a thief from using your existing financial accounts, so you still need to monitor them.
  4. Must be placed individually with all three big credit bureaus and all 5 small bureaus.
